International Women’s Day is a worldwide event that recognizes the accomplishments of women in social, economic, cultural, and political spheres. This week JCW Group is interviewing a diverse group of employees to gather their perspectives on this significant occasion.
Today, Associate Consultant, Keenan Gibson shares his viewpoint:
Tell us a bit about yourself and your ED&I journey?
As a black Australian male I have been on a constant ED&I journey my whole life. Coming from a professional sporting background I have had to deal with constant unfair treatment being a minority. I haven’t been put in the same situations so far in the workforce, in which I’m super grateful for.
When did you first realise the importance of Equity not just Equality?
Well the exact definition or equity should outline the importance to every individual. It is a fact in life that not everybody’s circumstances in life are the same at any point in life, coming from a background like mine where I was always the only black kid at school and in any sporting teams, I had to grow up a lot quicker then the average person. I believe now with more life experiences that equity is one of the most important parts of life, but I feel it is a lot more important for everyone to truly understand the exact meaning of the word and the impact it truly has on an individual that is a minority.
Why is it important to you to raise the profile/visibility of Women in the workplace?
To me this is super important. My wife being black and seeing her struggles in the workplace daily to gain the recognition she deserves, and outworking those around her to just receive the same visibility. This is something that needs to improve across the board, at all companies in my opinion.
Do you have any advice for Leaders on how to embrace Equity in the workplace?
Get to know your employees on deeper level, get to know the individual not just the professional. If you can gain a little knowledge & insight of their upbringing, struggles & motivations I believe it goes a long way to getting the best out of someone.
Would you like to add anything else?
Lets make all workplaces comfortable, inclusive & environments EVERY individual will thrive in.
